Louis Berger, architect of this house, opens the Bushwick firm behind thousands of Ridgewood and Bushwick buildings

Louis Berger was born in Rheinpfalz, Germany, in 1875, arrived in America as a child in 1880 and moved to Ridgewood in 1892. After studying at Pratt Institute and apprenticing with Carrere & Hastings, he opened his own office in Bushwick in 1895. His firm was architect of record for more than 5,000 buildings in Ridgewood and Bushwick through 1930, specializing in tenement houses, and Berger later served as president of the Brooklyn Society of Architects.

“Berger was known to have been the architect of record for over 5,000 buildings in Ridgewood and Bushwick between 1895 and 1930.”

This north-facing house on 68th Avenue was filed under new-building permit 1920 of 1909, with Paul Stier as original owner and Louis Berger & Company as architects. It is two stories on a basement, of brick, stone and metal, with its full-height rounded bay placed on the west side of the front. Landmarks surveyors found its original double wood-and-glass doors, its masonry stoop, and its areaway fence, gate and newel posts still in place.
