In 1897 the real estate developer Jacob L. Buttenwieser and the architect George F. Pelham completed these two nearly identical tenements. Buttenwieser, the American-born son of German Jewish immigrants, worked as a real estate operator for about fifty years from the late 1880s. He also gave to philanthropic causes, including the Citizens Union and the Hebrew Technical Institute. Pelham reused much the same facade design on other tenements across the district.
