Samuel Norsworthy, a merchant who was dead by the time the 1829-30 city directory appeared, built Nos. 651, 653 and 655 Washington Street in 1829. His widow Frances died in 1863 and the family estate kept all three houses until 1877, when lawyer Levi A. Lockwood bought them. Early tenants of No. 651 included a shoemaker and confectioner, a carman and a tailor.

The Ferrara family, Grand Street confectioners, buy the house and hold it until 1978

In 1905 Antonio and Antonetta Ferrara bought this house together with the tenement next door at 159-163 Christopher Street, and their family kept both until 1978. Antonio was listed as a confectioner at 195 Grand Street, and by 1975 a descendant, Anthony Lepore, owned Ferrara Foods and Confections there. The ground floor was converted to commercial use by 1939 and went back to residential use in 1997.
