In 1899 Benedict A. Klein had a six-story brick tenement built at 67-69 East 2nd Street, designed by George F. Pelham. The plans called for 50 families, eight on each floor and two in the basement. The building still has its original stoop, a heavy door hood over a carved entrance, and a bracketed cornice.

Pelham designs 67 East 2nd Street as one of six tenements for Klein and the Klingensteins

George F. Pelham was among the most prolific tenement architects of his day, and favored the Renaissance Revival style. Besides twelve buildings for his regular client Jacob L. Buttenwieser, he designed six for Benedict A. Klein and the Klingenstein developers, among them this one in 1899. The Landmarks Preservation Commission notes that his buildings share materials and facade layouts, including buff brick, brownstone belt courses and terra-cotta foliage.

“…he designed twelve such tenements for his frequent client Buttenwieser, as well as an additional six for the apparently affiliated developers Benedict A. Klein, Bernard Klingenstein, and Jacob Klingenstein.”
