  1. 1883

German-born mason Christian Doenecke, later builder of this house, arrives in the United States

Doenecke, born in 1859 in Helmershansen, Germany, came to America in 1883 and was naturalized three years later. By 1894 he was working as a mason in Brooklyn, and he went on to found Christian Doenecke & Co., a building firm dissolved in 1931. His wife, Katherina Kaeppel Doenecke, also German-born, appeared as owner of many of the houses he put up, and the couple later moved to White Plains.

Under building permit NB 3516-1913, the builder Christian Doenecke put up this Renaissance Revival house of two stories and a basement, one of a matched pair at 68-30 and 68-32. Louis Berger & Company drew the plans. The front of iron-spot brick swells into a rounded bay rising the full height, with brownstone and limestone trim, a bracketed door hood carved with stylized leaves, and a metal cornice hung with festoons and dentils.
