This three-story flats building at the corner of Catalpa Avenue is the first of a row of tenements, 59-01 to 59-11 Catalpa Avenue, built in 1908 by Fritz & Barudio and designed by Louis Berger & Company. Charles Fritz, a German-born builder who started in 1895, built many multiple dwellings in Ridgewood, at times with fellow German Joseph Barudio. The report calls the row more ornate than most of Berger's designs in the district.

Carved faces look out from the window keystones of a rusticated brick flats building

The building is faced in rusticated iron-spot brick with limestone sill courses, and the window lintels on the second and third stories have large keystones carved with masks. A classical hood on brackets marks the main entrance, and the metal cornice is decorated with wreaths, festoons and egg-and-dart molding. A storefront on the south side was removed after 1940 and filled in with tan brick and two windows.
