  1. 1896

A ten-story store and loft building goes up at 708 Broadway for lessee Ferdinand H. Mela

Cleverdon & Putzel designed this steel-framed, terra-cotta-trimmed building, built in 1896 for the lessee Ferdinand H. Mela. By 1912 it was connected inside to 402-408 Lafayette Street and its lot had been merged with that one. Openings were later cut through to its neighbors at 710 Broadway in 1941 and 704-706 Broadway in 1970.

Owner Alfred V. Barnes rebuilds the ground floor with a limestone storefront

In 1934 owner Alfred V. Barnes had architect Edward Necarsulmer rebuild the ground-story facade of 708 Broadway with a new limestone storefront and a replacement lobby. The building's ornate stepped terra-cotta gable was later shortened and modified after about 1938. The upper floors now hold joint living and working quarters.
