C.B.J. Snyder designs P.S. 69 as a neo-Tudor school for growing Jackson Heights

The city's Board of Education put up P.S. 69 in 1922-24, a five-story brick school with a two-story wing behind it, on a large lot covering most of the northern half of its block on 37th Avenue. Its architect, C.B.J. Snyder, was the board's Superintendent of Buildings and designed schools across all five boroughs from 1898 until he retired in 1923. As in many of his schools of the period, he chose a neo-Tudor dress: a Tudor-arched entry pavilion with terra-cotta spandrels, pointed-arched windows, label lintels and a crenelated parapet, in keeping with the Tudor-inspired houses and shops nearby.

Work begins on a large red-brick addition behind P.S. 69

In 1993 construction started on a large red-brick addition at the back of the school, on the 77th Street side of the lot, designed by Urbahn Associates. A one-story classroom building stands on the 78th Street side.

“At the rear of the building, on the 77th Street side of the lot, construction began in 1993 on a large addition, faced in red brick…”
