No. 770 belongs to a row of fourteen houses, laid out as seven pairs, that architect W. C. Dickerson designed in 1900 for George F. Johnson on the east side of Beck Street between East 156th Street and Longwood Avenue. According to the Landmarks Preservation Commission, Nos. 768-770 were first given the same design as Dickerson's houses at Nos. 724-726, with angular bays and arched second-story windows.

When the Landmarks Preservation Commission described the Longwood Historic District in 1980, it noted that the pairs at Nos. 768-770 and 776-778 had been sheathed in stone siding and looked much changed. Much original detail survived underneath the alterations, the report said, including the arched moldings, the carved impost bands at the second story and the cornice.

“Nos. 768-770 and Nos. 776-778 ... Covered with stone siding, these houses are quite altered in appearance…”
