  1. 1914

Gustave X. Mathews serves as his own architect for his last buildings in the district

The 1914 permits for this corner, on the northwest side of Madison Street at Woodward Avenue, name G. X. Mathews as both owner and architect, and they were the last his company built in the Ridgewood South district. The corner went up under three separate permits (NB 2469-14 to 2471-14). Because the railroad right-of-way left odd-sized, non-rectangular lots here, the floor plans differ from the company's standard flats.

“The last buildings in the district constructed by Mathews are loca ted on the northwest corner of Madison Street and Woodward Avenues.”

  2. 1958

Gustave X. Mathews, who built and designed this corner, dies at 88

Born in Rodalben in Germany's Palatinate in 1871, Gustave Xavier Mathews came to New York with his parents and brothers in 1886. He learned building from his father-in-law, the Bushwick-Ridgewood builder Louis Kuntz, and his four sons later joined his business. He died in 1958 at 88 after more than fifty years of building in Queens.
