The Star Heights Building Co. built Senate Gardens in 1937 (NB 779-1937), a six-story apartment house with a basement designed by Seelig & Finkelstein. Like other late Jackson Heights apartment houses, it took an end-block lot on 35th Avenue, here between 82nd and 83rd Streets, and was planned around a large entrance court set back from the street.

Senate Gardens copies the red-brick Georgian look of its Cohn Brothers neighbors

Seelig & Finkelstein faced Senate Gardens in red brick with white trim, closely following two slightly older Cohn Brothers buildings on the same block, Georgian Gardens (34-57 82nd Street) and the Colonial Arms (34-20 83rd Street). Its doorway has paired pilasters under a broken pediment, and oculus-pierced pediments top the roofline. The original six-over-six wood windows survive, though the parapet has been altered and the second-story balconettes removed, leaving their brackets.

“…similar in its design to two slightly earlier buildings designed by the Cohn Brothers: the adjacent Georgian Gardens at 34-57 82nd Street and the Colonial Arms…”
