Joseph Gerlo and Charles S. Freeman build the Queen Elizabeth alongside a matching Queen Victoria

Developers Joseph Gerlo and Charles S. Freeman had architect Hyman I. Feldman design the six-story Queen Elizabeth, built in 1950-51 on the north side of 35th Avenue between 85th and 86th Streets, with a basement garage reached by a driveway from 85th Street. At about the same time Feldman designed a near twin for them, the Queen Victoria, on the south side of the avenue one block east. A late take on the Moderne style, the building wraps a landscaped entrance court and has horizontal brick banding on every facade, with header-and-stretcher patterns framing the entrance.

“…very similar to the Queen Victoria, located on the south side of 35th Avenue one block to the east, which was designed by Feldman for the same developers…”
