Auctioneer John Glover builds two houses at 8 and 12 East 16th Street

John Glover, an auctioneer, put up two houses here in 1846 and 1847, during the first phase of development in what is now the Ladies' Mile district. Number 12 went to a merchant named James Suydam, and number 8 to Charles B. Moore, who stayed there until 1888. In 1849 the merchant Samuel F. Tracy bought Suydam's house, and his family lived in it until 1866, when it passed to Maria S. F. Heurstel.

“…originally constructed as two houses by John Glover, an auctioneer, in 1846 and 1847…”

Two old houses are joined into one building with flats and studios for six families

In 1887 and 1888 the real-estate investor Jacob H. V. Cockcroft and his daughters Mary and Elizabeth bought both houses. They hired Harding & Dinkelberg to link them inside as flats and studios for six families and to give them a single new front with bay windows. Stores filled the basement and first floor, and one of the two basement shops was a restaurant for many years, including 1939 to 1951.

“…commissioned in 1888 to join the two buildings internally for use as flats and studios for six families…”
