A swindler sells a trunk of bricks as $40,000 in gold from 130 MacDougal Street
In April 1894 Lorenze Cravagh approached Luke Cappio, a man booking passage on a steamship to Europe, and lured him to 130 MacDougal Street. He asked Cappio to carry a heavy trunk of gold to Italy and to leave a $200 deposit. Cappio, curious, broke the trunk open the day before sailing and found bricks. Police arrested Cravagh in the house on April 27.

Police raid the houses run by 'Madame Herman' at 130 and 132 MacDougal
By the end of the 1890s the brothel at 132 MacDougal, run by Madame Herman, had spread into 130 next door. A 1895 State Senate investigation and a 1896 Society for the Prevention of Crime list had already flagged 132 as a brothel. On March 2, 1903 the Times reported raids by Captain Gorman that included her houses at both numbers.
