Columbia finishes a 15-story 'skyscraper dorm' designed by McKim, Mead & White
After the First World War, rising enrollment and steep Morningside Heights rents pushed Columbia to build more housing, and this tower was meant to nearly double the height of its older dormitories. Originally called Students Hall, it was among the last buildings by McKim, Mead & White and was finished in 1927. Besides rooms, it held a dining hall, a rathskeller and fourth-floor offices for student publications such as the Jester and the Spectator.

Anti-war demonstrators corner Marine recruiters in the lobby
Columbia let two Marine sergeants set up a recruiting desk in the lobby. After a Students for a Democratic Society rally at the sundial, demonstrators marched over and packed the lobby, shouting down the recruiters. More than 200 surrounded the team for forty minutes, at least three fistfights broke out, and a flying wedge of athletes and ROTC members finally led the Marines out. Dean Irving J. Koff had asked the crowd to clear the lobby, but the demonstrators refused to move.
