Earlier on this corner, houses built for the DeKlyn estate stand until 1903

Before the apartment house, the corner held houses built in 1842 for the DeKlyn estate. Leonard DeKlyn, a merchant, had bought the surrounding land in 1817, and his heirs developed it in the 1840s with rows of speculative houses on Jane Street, West 12th Street and Greenwich Avenue. This was an earlier building on the site.

Built in 1903 for Harris Ratner, this corner building has a rounded bay at the corner and Renaissance-style ornament and quoins, which the Landmarks Preservation Commission called typical of the architect, George F. Pelham. It has stores on the Greenwich Avenue side. It took the place of houses that had stood on the corner since 1842.

“…designed by George F. Pelham and erected in 1903 for Harris Ratner. The studied use of Renaissance decorative motifs and corner quoins is typical…”
