Six houses go up for the Walsh heirs, probably built by John Hanrahan; No. 122 is one

The Landmarks Preservation Commission says six houses were built in 1848 at Nos. 114 to 124 for the heirs of Elizabeth Walsh. The heirs sold the lots to the builder John Hanrahan in May 1848, so he probably built the row. Only Nos. 114, 122 and 124 remain, with their original stoops and dentiled cornices.

“Of a fine row of six houses built in 1848 (at Nos. 114-124) for the heirs of Elizabeth Walsh, only Nos. 114, 122 and 124 remain.”

A messenger bangs on the door looking for art dealer Roland Knoedler after a woman is trapped in his gallery

Roland Knoedler of M. Knoedler & Co. lived here after the Stinson estate sold the house in December 1894. On June 30, 1900, a messenger knocked on the door of the house looking for him after a visitor, Mary Hurst, was accidentally locked in the vestibule of his Fifth Avenue gallery. Crowds gathered outside until a policeman crossed the roof from a neighboring mansion and pried open the roof hatch to free her.
