Henry Congdon designs a warehouse at the Prince Street and West Broadway corner for Edward Abbott

Between May and August 1879 the builders Jeans & Taylor put up a four-story brick and iron warehouse at the southeast corner of Prince Street and West Broadway, to plans by Henry Congdon. Edward Abbott was the owner. A mansard roof added in 1892-94 made it five stories. The Landmarks Preservation Commission describes the result as modified Romanesque, with a tall chimney on the West Broadway side that looks medieval.

  2. 1894

Congdon adds a six-story extension at 138 Prince Street beside his earlier warehouse

In 1894 the architect Henry Congdon returned to his 1879 warehouse at 140-142 Prince Street and added a six-story, three-bay extension next door at No. 138, again for Edward Abbott. It was finished that June. The two sections are in the same modified Romanesque style and are tied together by an iron cornice running at ground-floor level. The extension has brick panels beneath its windows and arched fourth- and fifth-floor windows.

“No. 140-142 was built in 1879, and No. 138 was added as an extension in 1894 by the architect of the earlier building. The two sections are joined by an iron cornice.”
