George Keister designs the French flats at West 4th Street and Cornelia Street for William Rankin

In 1890 architect George Keister designed a five-story Renaissance Revival apartment house on the Cornelia Street corner of West 4th Street for owner William Rankin, as row houses across Greenwich Village were giving way to tenements and French flats. Keister drew up the neighboring flats at 166 West 4th Street for Rankin at the same time. The 1900 census showed American, German, French, Irish, English and Italian families living there in a variety of trades.
