1861 Cornelia Street went up in 1911 under building permit NB 1317-11, filed by the developer G. X. Mathews with Louis Allmendinger as architect. The permit covered eight buildings on the west side of the block between Onderdonk and Woodward Avenues, from 1851 (the Onderdonk Avenue corner) through 1867. The landmarks report classes their style as a mix of Renaissance and Romanesque Revival.

G. X. Mathews agrees to buy the Meyerrose farm, the land this row was built on
In February 1911 the builder G. X. Mathews agreed to buy the whole Meyerrose farm in Ridgewood for a reported $400,000, or $20,000 an acre, a record for land there. Deeds show he took title in half- and quarter-block pieces starting that August, and he filed building permits in groups of eight or nine, selling houses as they were finished. The permit for this row, NB 1317-11, is among the records the landmarks report cites for that development.

Landmarks survey finds 1861 Cornelia Street's carved door hood intact but its stoop replaced
Read more
When the Ridgewood South Historic District was surveyed, 1861 Cornelia Street still had its pale yellow brick front on an amber brick base, round- and segmental-arched lintels, and a carved limestone entrance with a pedimented hood on brackets. Its original stoop had given way to one of brick and cast stone, and vinyl windows filled all but two of its openings, which had storm windows.
