Joseph Weiss & Company finishes 1879 Stockholm Street as the end of a seven-house row

The last of seven houses running from 1867 to 1879 Stockholm Street, number 1879 was built in 1909 under building permit NB 2044-1909. Joseph Weiss & Company developed the row from designs by Louis Berger & Company. Faced in brick and two stories high above a basement, it follows the Classical Revival style of its neighbors.

The house at 1879 Stockholm Street is built as two flats, one on each floor

Like the other two-story houses on the block, 1879 Stockholm Street was laid out with a separate apartment on each floor above an unfinished basement. The ground-floor flat had five rooms, while the upper flat had six because it gained a room above the first-floor entry hall. Each apartment came with a full bathroom and tub. By 1920, census records showed most owners on the block living in one flat and renting out the other.

“Each of the two-story houses originally contained one apartment per floor and an unfinished basement. First floor apartments had five rooms…”

The 2000 landmark survey found the curved three-bay front of 1879 Stockholm Street with its full-width wood porch of Doric columns and square spindles intact, though a metal awning had been added. The historic double wood-and-glass doors remained, while the stoop was a newer brick one with new railings and the fence, gate, light fixture and windows replaced. Rock-faced limestone lintels and a pressed-metal cornice with swags and scrolled brackets complete the facade.
