In 1833 the mason Israel Clark, the merchant Ellison C. Scott and the builder John G. Hadden bought a parcel from Thomas and Maria Ludlow. After they split it into three lots in 1834, Clark built 189 Spring Street as a three-story brick row house, finishing it around 1835. It shared a party wall with the neighboring house built by Hadden and his partner Silvanus Gedney, and was later stuccoed and stripped of its stone lintels.
