1896 Madison Street, also 778 and 784 Woodward Avenue, ends a row filed in 1911 by architect Louis Allmendinger (1878-1937), a Brooklyn-born Cooper Union graduate who designed 149 of the 167 buildings the G. X. Mathews Company put up in the district. It was built with a corner storefront, and its nine-bay side elevation has a one-story rear extension with historic pressed-metal storefront cornices. Allmendinger also designed Brooklyn's Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Our Lord.

“…most (149 of 167) buildings constructed in the Ridgewood South Historic District by the G. X. Mathews Company were designed by architect Louis Allmendinger…”
