The highest-numbered of eight houses filed together in 1909 under permit NB 1859-09, 2042 Gates Avenue was developed by G. X. Mathews to plans by Louis Berger and Company, closing the row that begins at 2028. Its Renaissance Revival facade is buff brick with carved limestone lintels and brown-painted paired wood-and-glass doors. By the 2009 designation report its door surround and basement stonework had been painted gray and aluminum windows had replaced the originals.
