Gustave Mathews buys the farmland where the Gates Avenue rows will rise

Gustave Mathews bought the Fleckenstein farm property in 1907, and Katharina Schwamb, widow of Michael Schwamb, sold him portions of her family's former farm the next year. The first plans filed on this land were for the houses on both sides of Gates Avenue, in 1908 and 1909, all naming Louis Berger & Co. as architect.

The 2009 historic district report describes a five-bay buff brick front with carved limestone lintels, rough-faced brown brick trim at the ground floor, brick pilasters on carved stone bases and a denticulated, modillioned cornice with swags, painted tan. The paired wood-and-glass doors survived, though the areaway ironwork had lost some detail. Vinyl windows, a light over the entry, brown paint on the base and a brick and cast stone stoop were later changes.
