Developer G. X. Mathews filed plans in 1908 (NB 2484-08) for 2039 Gates Avenue and the seven other houses from 2029 to 2043, with Louis Berger and Company as architects. Done in the Renaissance Revival style, the house has a buff brick front of five bays, brick pilasters on carved limestone bases and a dentiled cornice. In the 2009 designation report the front had been cleaned and repointed, the cornice was painted dark gray, and the stoop was a later brick and concrete replacement.
