Detlef Lienau designs a six-story warehouse at 22-26 Howard Street for plate-glass maker Noel & Saurel

Noel & Saurel, manufacturers of French and Belgian plate glass, commissioned architect Detlef Lienau to design this warehouse in 1864-65, as SoHo was changing from a residential area to a commercial one. Its brick-and-stone front combines incised floral patterns with segmental arches, which the landmarks commission calls pioneering for so early a date. A few years later the firm hired Lienau again for a similar, narrower addition on Crosby Street.

Noel & Saurel stayed in its Howard Street warehouse until 1888. The Continental Art Glass and Brass Co. then occupied it until that company went bankrupt in 1912. Later tenants included a perfumer in 1917, wholesale stationers in 1919, the American Machinery Co. in 1932 and the Spriesch Tool & Manufacturing Co. in 1943.

BDDW, an upscale furniture store, opens in the old Noel & Saurel warehouse

By 2006 the former plate-glass warehouse at 22-26 Howard Street, also numbered 5-7 Crosby Street, held BDDW, a high-end furniture store. The landmarks commission cited the shop as a sign of SoHo's rising popularity with upscale retailers in the early twenty-first century. The building remained in commercial use.
