The shoemakers who built the houses at Nos. 24-28 sell the row for $6,000
Asher Martin and John Bennet built Nos. 24 through 28 Commerce Street in 1821, three houses each just 16 feet wide. Neither man seems to have lived in them, and they leased the houses for more than 30 years. On January 15, 1852 they sold all three together as a package for $6,000. By 1835 Martin was working for the city as an assessor, and Bennet had turned carpenter.
