Berean Baptist Church leaves the Bedford and Downing corner for Washington Square

For most of the 1800s the northwest corner of Bedford and Downing Streets, where No. 31 now stands, held the Berean Baptist Church, a congregation founded in 1838. As it grew, the church outgrew the corner and in 1892 moved to its new home, Judson Memorial Baptist Church on Washington Square. This entry describes an earlier building on the site.

Architect J. C. Cocker designed 31-33 Bedford Street as one of a pair of Renaissance Revival flats buildings with shops on the ground floor. It was built in 1907 for the Buscemi Building and Construction Company. The plan was withdrawn from its first permit application and refiled the next year with no changes by Cocker. By 1909 the property had passed to Michael and Giuseppe Di Santi.
