Solomon Deutsch builds a five-story Italianate store and loft on leased ground

Solomon Deutsch put up a five-story, sandstone-fronted store and loft building here between 1868 and 1870, leasing the lot from Maria L. Van Deventer. The architect was Louis Berger, and the new building replaced a two-story frame dwelling. One of its typical tenants was Alexander Knox, a thread merchant; by the time of the Landmarks Preservation Commission's 1992 report, the ground floor held a restaurant and the upper stories had been converted to residential use.

Lisa Ecklund-Flores and Lauri Bailey open the Church Street School on the second floor

In September 1990 two teachers from the Greenwich Street Music School, Lisa Ecklund-Flores and Lauri Bailey, opened the Church Street School for Music and Art in a second-floor space at 311 Church, at Walker Street. They chose Tribeca because there was nothing yet for children in the neighborhood. The school started with 150 students and one room each for art and for music, and in 1996 moved to the ground floor of 74 Warren Street.
