The Plymouth Apartments rise as the last of Wells's early walk-up groups on 82nd Street

This is one of four buildings of the Plymouth Apartments, completed in 1916. It was the final project in the run of walk-up groups George H. Wells designed along 82nd Street, after Laurel Court, Oban and Penrhyn Courts, Willow Court and the Colonial Apartments. The street was the main link between the Northern Boulevard trolley stop and the Roosevelt Avenue elevated station.

Cass Gilbert veteran George H. Wells designs the Plymouth Apartments

George Henry Wells joined Cass Gilbert's office in 1900 and remained for fifteen years, assisting on many of that firm's major commissions. Laurel Court, his first Jackson Heights design, dates from 1914, while he was still on Gilbert's staff; he then opened his own practice and drew apartment houses for the Queensboro Corporation for the next decade, including the Plymouth group. He lived in Mount Vernon, New York, for most of the years from 1899 to 1935.

“Wells was still in Gilbert's office in 1914 when he designed Laurel Court, his first project in Jackson Heights.”
