Fillmore Gardens Corp. starts Oak Hall East and West, twin Cohn Brothers apartment houses

Oak Hall East at 35-34 84th Street and Oak Hall West at 35-33 83rd Street were built back to back in 1930-31 for the Fillmore Gardens Corp. to designs by the Cohn Brothers. The identical buildings rise six stories over a basement, and each is split into two sections by a wide recessed court used both as entrance and lightcourt. The Landmarks Preservation Commission counts them among the later apartment houses in the Jackson Heights Historic District.

The Cohn Brothers gave Oak Hall East a neo-Romanesque brick facade with diaperwork, corbel tables and blind arches, arched windows set between stone colonnettes, balconettes, gargoyles and cartouches. At the top, square and polygonal corner towers hold arcaded loggias. Brick walls with stone pedestals flank the entry court, each pedestal carrying a stone lion, and ornate ironwork spans the gap between them.

“At each entry court, brick walls with stone pedestals support stone lions; elaborate ironwork spans the opening between the pedestals.”
