  1. 1917

    November

Plans are announced for Linden Court, a whole block of garden apartments by Andrew J. Thomas

In November 1917 Queensboro Corporation president E. A. MacDougall announced that a full block of Jackson Heights garden apartments was being planned, between 84th and 85th Streets, designed by Andrew J. Thomas for the Queensboro Corporation. Work did not start until mid-1919, a delay the Landmarks Preservation Commission attributes to World War I and trouble raising money. The Title Guarantee & Trust Company eventually lent about $500,000, which with the land made a $900,000 investment.

  2. 1919

Linden Court becomes the first Jackson Heights complex offered under cooperative ownership

Linden Court, built in 1919-21, was the first Jackson Heights complex offered under a plan of cooperative ownership. Starting with it, the Queensboro Corporation sold its apartments as co-ops and also turned existing rental buildings in the neighborhood into cooperatives. The Landmarks Preservation Commission says the company thereby set the legal precedent for co-op conversions, which later had an enormous effect on New York City's real estate market.
