MacDougall announces a full block of garden apartments that becomes Linden Court
In November 1917, as the Greystones neared completion, MacDougall announced that a whole Jackson Heights block of garden apartments was being planned. The project, designed by Andrew J. Thomas, became Linden Court, filling the block between 37th and Roosevelt avenues and 84th and 85th streets. Building did not start until the middle of 1919, a delay the Landmarks Preservation Commission puts down to World War I and trouble raising money.
“In November of 1917, while die Greystones were nearing completion, MacDougall announced that plans were being prepared for an entire block of garden apartments…”

Linden Court's building at Nos. 37-11 and 37-17 rises with garages behind it
Nos. 37-11 and 37-17 84th Street make up one of the ten four-story-and-basement buildings Andrew J. Thomas designed for Linden Court, filed as New Building 2766 in 1919. Each building's facade has two arched entrances, one for each unit. No earlier complex in Jackson Heights had offered parking: the driveways between its buildings lead back to one-story garages in the rear lightcourts.

Self-taught architect Andrew J. Thomas designs Linden Court for the Queensboro Corporation
Linden Court was designed by Andrew Jackson Thomas (1875-1965), whom the Landmarks Preservation Commission credits as the developer of the garden apartment. Born in lower Manhattan to a diamond broker, he was orphaned at 13 and worked jobs from the Yukon gold fields to collecting tenement rents before teaching himself architecture as a builder's timekeeper. After World War I he went to work for the Queensboro Corporation, and around 1922 Metropolitan Life hired him for its first housing projects in Queens.
