Built in 1922 under permit NB 8138-1922, which also covered 37-41 next door, 37-49 85th Street is part of George H. Wells's Cambridge Court. When the Landmarks Preservation Commission described the complex in 1993, this building and 37-42 86th Street were the only two it named as still having their original multi-pane double-hung wood sash windows. Most of the complex's paneled wood-and-glass doors also survived.
