Reuben R. Wood, a Village builder active since the early 1830s, bought this Bank Street property in 1850 from Gorham A. Worth. The next year he erected a row of four three-story brick Greek Revival houses on it, of which No. 38 is one. The same year he built four more houses for Worth on adjoining lots facing West 11th Street. Each house had a high stoop leading to a brownstone doorway.

“Reuben R. Wood, a builder who had established himself in business in the early Eighteen-thirties ... erected this row of brick three-story Greek Revival dwellings in 1851.”
