  1. 1851

No. 42 Bank Street begins as one of four Greek Revival houses built in 1851

Builder Reuben R. Wood erected four three-story brick houses on this stretch of Bank Street in 1851, and No. 42 was one of them. It was later replaced by an apartment house. The three houses that remain beside it, Nos. 36, 38 and 40, show what the row looked like.

In 1910 Charles Rubinger commissioned architect Henry S. Lion to design a six-story brick apartment house here. Stone trim contrasts with the brick at the canopied entrance, the window lintels and the band courses, and arched pediments with sculpted ornament top the second-story windows. A projecting bracketed cornice crowns the facade, and elaborate wrought iron railings enclose the areaway.
