A gabled row house goes up at the south end of Harrison Place's west-side row on 49th Street

39-22 49th Street dates from 1927 and is one of seven Harrison Place row houses on the west side of 49th Street, the old Heiser Street, in Sunnyside Gardens. Only it and 39-24 next door were given eaves-front pitched roofs of slate shingle; the five houses to the north sit a little back from the street under flat roofs edged with patterned brick parapets. The Landmarks Preservation Commission classes this house as row house type U'.

“The first two buildings, 39-24 and 39-22 49th Street, have slate shingled, eaves front, pitched roofs.”

A Sunnyside historian explains why this end of the block left Jefferson Court for Harrison Place

The north part of tax block 133, where this house stands, was first built as part of Jefferson Court, whose other houses are arranged as a mews court. Sunnyside historian Herbert Reynolds, interviewed for the landmark report in May 2007, said the conventional street-facing row houses were split off because the mews arrangement cost more, since paving, sewer and electric lines had to be maintained. These rows are now counted in Harrison Place.

“…northern portion of tax block 133 (now part of Harrison Place) was originally constructed as part of Jefferson Court…”

Landmarks surveyors find a later brick porch enclosure on 39-22 49th Street

When Sunnyside Gardens became a historic district in 2007, the commission's survey noted a non-historic enclosed brick porch at the entry of 39-22 49th Street, with its own gabled, slate-shingled roof and a door, a light and a flagpole on its south side. The windows were one-over-one vinyl fitted with snap-in six-over-six muntins, the bay was painted white, and three through-wall air conditioners projected from the facade.
