39-16 49th Street trades its paired windows for picture windows

This type I' house was built in 1927 as part of Harrison Place's seven-house row on the west side of 49th Street. By the time of the 2007 landmark survey, a picture window between narrow one-over-one sash had taken the place of the original paired six-over-six windows on both floors. The commission also recorded a jalousie window at the basement, a metal awning over the door and an air conditioner set through the first-floor wall, while the historic door surround and hood remained.

Harrison Place's shared garden is found largely divided into private yards

Harrison Place has just one central garden court, the northern part of block 133, enclosed by the rows facing 48th Street, 39th Avenue and 49th Street, including the row with 39-16. Comparing the original court plan with the current one in its 2007 designation report, the Landmarks Preservation Commission found that much of this common lawn had been taken into individual yards and fenced off. Through-block or garden paths run behind seven of the court's nine rows.

“…much of this garden court has been annexed to individual yards and surrounded with fencing…”
