  1. 1927

39-73 opens a 1927 Roosevelt Court row of six, turned sideways toward the through-block path

The Landmarks Preservation Commission dates this row of six houses on 47th Street to 1927, part of Sunnyside Gardens' Roosevelt Court. The first four houses have flat roofs and stand back from the street, and 39-73, the northernmost, is set back farthest and turned perpendicular to the row so it faces the path through the block. The flat-roofed houses share a toothed brick cornice, stepped piers and open brickwork at the parapet, and the row has projecting bay windows.

“…the northernmost building more recessed and set perpendicular to the row, facing the through-block path…”

39-73's cast-iron porch frames a bricked-in porch by the time of the 2007 landmarks survey

On the 47th Street side of 39-73, the house's two-story cast-iron porch survives, but the Commission's 2007 designation report found it framing non-historic brick infill with a door, a mailbox and a light, plus three casement windows. Upstairs, a green metal awning and a railing shaded the second-floor terrace, which still had its historic door. White wood lattice screened the foundation and the porch, and the parapet had been rebuilt.
