  1. 1925

39-82 48th Street rises in 1925 as a flat-roofed house in a mixed Roosevelt Court row

The Landmarks Preservation Commission dates the house to 1925 and assigns it to Roosevelt Court, where it is one of a row of six houses, flat-roofed or gabled, divided among four designs that include mirror-image versions. Only the two southernmost houses, 39-84 and 39-88, got gable roofs; 39-82 is one of the flat-roofed members, which were trimmed at the parapet with bluestone coping, a corbelled brick cornice, stepped piers and brick openwork. Projecting bay windows, wood pilasters and cast-stone sills complete the decoration.

When Sunnyside Gardens was surveyed for its 2007 designation, the house was catalogued as type Q on tax block 148, lot 78. Its porch had been enclosed with non-historic brick, and the first-floor windows had been reworked, with three casements set into a widened second bay and the third bay filled with brick. Plastic awnings had been added, and the front yard held a large pipe-framed carport, a metal trellis, a lamppost and a concrete driveway.

“…window openings at 1st fl altered, 3 slightly projecting casements in enlarged 2nd bay, brick infill in 3rd bay; non-historic brick porch infill…”
