  1. 1926

45-19 Skillman Avenue is built as a corner house turned to face 46th Street

Also numbered 39-90 46th Street, this flat-roofed house closes the east end of a 1926 Washington Court row of eight houses along the north side of Skillman Avenue. Instead of lining up with the row, it is set back and turned sideways to face 46th Street, mirroring No. 45-01 at the 45th Street end. Cast-stone finials top its parapet corners, and its Skillman Avenue side was given a two-story cast-iron porch.

“The flat roof end buildings are recessed from the streetwall and set perpendicular to the row, facing 45th (45-01 Skillman Avenue) and 46th Streets (45-19 Skillman Avenue).”

The landmarks survey finds 45-19 Skillman Avenue's porch enclosed but its stone finials intact

By the time the Landmarks Preservation Commission surveyed the house for the 2007 Sunnyside Gardens designation, its Skillman Avenue porch had been closed in with wood and vinyl siding, four windows and a side door, and the second-floor terrace had a metal railing and awning. The bay windows were clad in aluminum under shiny copper roofs. The historic cast-stone finials at the corners of the roof were still in place.
