The building was completed around 1859-60 for Charles A. Baudouine. Its marble front has two tiers of double-height arches, and the lot runs 175 feet back to Cortlandt Alley, where it is number 20. A fire in 1890 forced repairs to the stonework. The building replaced a masonry dwelling on Broadway and a masonry store on the alley side, and served as a store and warehouse.

A new galvanized-iron storefront by Herman Lee Meader serves a United Dairy Lunch at 392 Broadway

In 1913-14 the estate of Charles Baudouine, still the owner, had architect Herman Lee Meader install a storefront of galvanized iron and plate glass. The lessee was the United Dairy Lunch Company, and the Landmarks Preservation Commission notes that a restaurant occupied the ground floor at that time. Some of the 1913 cast-iron framing survives.
