A financier and a carpenter build eleven houses on Charles Street, then lose them at auction
In 1845-46 the wealthy former state senator Myndert Van Schaick developed this south side of Charles Street with the carpenter Patrick Cogan, who built a row of eleven Greek Revival houses, No. 4 among them. Cogan bought the land with a mortgage from Van Schaick but could not finish and sell the houses in time. The next year Van Schaick sued over the unpaid mortgage, and the court auctioned the property to the highest bidders.
“…upon Van Schaick's suing for the unpaid mortgage, the court put up the property at public auction, and the houses were sold to the various individuals who were the highest bidders.”
