In 1893 F. H. Mela had Cleverdon & Putzel design an eight-story warehouse and loft building at 402-408 Lafayette Street, which replaced the Collegiate Middle Church. It went up as the street was becoming more commercial in character. By 1912 its lot was merged with the neighboring 708 Broadway building, and after 1970 the floors above the shops became offices.

Widening of Lafayette Street and the subway force changes to 402-408 Lafayette Street

In 1911 the sidewalk vault under the building was altered because Lafayette Street was being widened and the subway built beneath it. The owner of record was the estate of A. C. Barnes. Three years later, in 1914, owner Alfred V. Barnes had a water tank installed on the roof.

“The sidewalk vault was altered due to the widening of Lafayette Street and the construction of the subway.”
