William Naugle, known for the observatory beside New York's Crystal Palace, designed this five-story store and loft in 1867-68 for David Straus, a flower importer. It replaced a two-story masonry dwelling. Later occupants included George Legg & Son, later Legg & Simon, makers and sellers of artificial flowers.

Pearl Paint's former building at 42 Lispenard Street is being converted into four lofts

The cast-iron building in the Tribeca East Historic District was part of the Pearl Paint store, the art supply retailer whose main address was 308 Canal Street. In May 2016 Trans World Equities filed permits to turn it into four full-floor lofts with a two-story addition. The penthouse was listed that September, with two of the other lofts already in contract.
