Lawyer Frederick Camp builds one of the first houses on the old Delafield Estate

Frederick Camp, a lawyer, had this Craftsman house built in 1911-12 (NB 881-1911), making it one of the earliest homes on land that had been the Delafield Estate. His architect, Nathaniel Vickers (1846-1949), had restored English cathedrals before coming to the United States in 1885, and in New York helped design St. Patrick's Cathedral's Lady Chapel and St. John the Divine's organ screen. Between 1921 and 1923 Camp went on to build the neighboring houses at 4401 and 4411 Tibbett Avenue, which the Landmarks Preservation Commission suggests may have been for relatives. A basement-level garage was probably added around 1952, but the house otherwise survives with little change.

“…built in 1911-12 for Frederick Camp as one of the first homes to be built on the former Delafield Estate. Camp was a lawyer…”
