It is unclear when 53 Great Jones Street was first built. Buildings Department records show that in 1882 architect Hopkins Williams turned an existing two-story structure into an office for H. W. Grimm. Over the following decade further alterations adapted it for use as a workshop and as a stable.

Great Jones Lumber buys 53 Great Jones Street and uses it as an annex

Great Jones Lumber Corporation bought 53 Great Jones Street in 1951 and has apparently used it as an annex since the late 1950s. Earlier, in 1928, architect Harry Kirshbaum gave the building a new brick front and reworked the interior as a warehouse and workshop. From about 1935 to 1939 the tenants were an electrician and Sol Kramer's firm, which did restaurant-equipment and sheet-metal work, and the fur dealers Meyer Menblatt and Ridge Trading occupied it from about 1945 until around 1955.
