Developer Kilian Schurger was the original owner of this two-family house, filed under permit NB 1819-1909 and designed by Louis Berger & Company. It is one of nine houses at 58-07 to 58-23 70th Avenue. The facade is orange iron-spot brick with brownstone and limestone trim, a rounded bay running its full height, and lintels carved with stylized leaves; historic iron stoop railings, newel posts and an iron areaway fence survive.

  2. 1925

Ridgewood's streets are renamed, and Halleck and Edsall Avenues become 70th Avenue

Before the renaming, today's 70th Avenue was known as Halleck Avenue and Edsall Avenue. In 1925 the Board of Aldermen renamed most of the streets in the Ridgewood area under a numbered plan that Queens phased in between 1915 and 1926 to end confusing duplicates left after its towns and villages were consolidated in 1898. Onderdonk Avenue was among the handful of streets in the district that kept their old names.

“70th Avenue (Halleck Avenue and Edsall Avenue) ... Street names that remained unchanged were Onderdonk Avenue…”
