  1. 1880

German mason Henry Schlachter, later builder of 58-28 Catalpa Avenue, arrives in the United States

Henry Schlachter (1860-1921), who developed the row of storefront houses that includes 58-28 Catalpa Avenue, emigrated from his native Germany in 1880 and started out as a mason. He went on to build two-family houses and six-family flats in Bushwick and Ridgewood, worked on the rectory of St. Matthias R.C. Church, and later developed single-family homes north of Jamaica Village.

“Henry Schlachter (1860-1921) was born in Germany, and came to the United States in 1880 to begin his career as a mason.”

  2. 1910

58-28 Catalpa Avenue loses its shopfront to a window and stone veneer

Henry Schlachter built 58-28 Catalpa Avenue around 1910 (NB 1114-1910) to plans by Adam Schlachter, one of four two-story store-and-flats buildings on the block. The upper story keeps its limestone sills, splayed limestone lintels and modillioned cornice. Below, the storefront was later taken out and replaced with a window opening faced in stone veneer, its cornice was removed and yellow brick filled its place, and the entrance was made smaller.
